WATERLOCK Grain Corn Hybrids with Superior Drought Tolerance

Make the Most Out of Each Drop. Higher Resilience Against Drought to Face Climate Change

More from Every Drop

Grain corn hybrids from the MAS Seeds portfolio that have a superior ability to thrive under drought stress are labelled WATERLOCK.

Rigorously tested, WATERLOCK varieties have shown resilience in situations of short term or longer term drought stress. That means you can feel confident choosing WATERLOCK maize hybrids in all-weather scenarios as a way to manage risk on your farm.

WATERLOCK's Benefits for Farmers

In situations where corn plants have to face short or long period of drought stress, WATERLOCK corn hybrids have demonstrated their yield superiority compared to market competitors. They deliver security to farmers, and a guarantee of profitability in all-weather scenarios.

WATERLOCK hybrids have shown a yield superiority of an additional 3,3 dt/ha on average in fields with drought stress detected (data collected 2012-2021). Each year, corn hybrids from all maturity group are tested in MAS Seeds R&D network, more than 120 locations in 17 countries.

Discover the Science behind WATERLOCK Corn Varieties

Hear from the MAS Seeds team first-hand the story of why we developed the WATERLOCK maize segment and get a look behind the scenes at our seed development and breeding.

Bred for Success

MAS Seeds R&D team carefully selected varieties whose plants showed physiological resilience in four key areas.

WATERLOCK maize hybrids have a better capacity to perform under drought conditions – delivering strong yields for your farm.

Synchronisation of Flowering

female flowering

Through careful selection and breeding we have selected varieties that have synchronisation between the emergence of silks and pollen shed. This allows proper pollination and optimal kernel number on ear.

Early Flowering

early flowering

During flowering stage, maize plants are highly sensitive to drought stress. WATERLOCK varieties flower early. By speeding up the flower window these varieties take advantage of spring moisture and avoid flowering in the summer heat waves.

Strong Root System

With strong, deep root system, WATERLOCK varieties can access soil moisture and nutrients better. This is essential in delaying the effects of dry conditions – reducing stress and damage to the crop.

Leaf Area Index Establishment and Upkeep

WATERLOCK varieties have good leaf establishment and maintenance of leaf area – even under drought stress. This ensures that photosynthesis is maximized in all conditions.

R&D Investments

Wide Corn Trial Network

MAS Seeds is deloping its R&D centers in Ukraine, Romania, Russia with local breeding programs. In these regions where water supply is limited, our team is able to identify accurately the most productive genetic resources.

Large Data Collection

data collection

  • Phenotype data: plant morphology, physiology, yield components
  • Environmental data: climate data, soil water supply, crop management
  • Genotype data: complete genetic screening of all resources involved

Modern Data Analytics Methods

data collection

Our data scientist team is integrating the data collected in the field and in the laboratory, in order to evaluate and predict the drought tolerance of our new coming corn hybrids.

WATERLOCK Maize Seeds Portfolio

The MAS Seeds WATERLOCK portfolio offers for spring 2022 a range of 17 grain corn varieties developed by their R&D team.

From physiological characteristics to quantitative measures such as yield, MAS Seeds breeders say they’re keeping a close eye on genetics by environment to maximize yields for tomorrow. This breeding work has led to the creation of the WATERLOCK grain corn genetic, resilient hybrids with high tolerance to drought.
